Supervised Medication

Administration of prescribed medication is the responsibility of qualified registered nurses only. However, supervision/assisting and overseeing of taking your own prescribed medication is acceptable. Care 4 u will not administer medication. If medicines need to be dispensed from a dosette box, a medication form will be completed and present in your documentation.

Home Care Worker

  • Care workers are allowed to supervise you taking your prescribed medication, encouraging you to read the labels carefully.
  • All medicines should be kept in a safe place, in clearly labelled packaging stating your name and name of drug.
  • Dosset boxes must be used for dispensing prescribed medication. The care workers are not allowed to fill the container, as it is the responsibility of the Pharmacist. Liquid medication must be dispensed using a measuring cup/spoon measure.
  • If you would like a care worker to apply some non-prescribed cream the care worker will ensure the instructions are read first but will not apply on open wounds.
  • In the interest of hygiene and safety, care workers will wear gloves to carry out the process.
  • Care workers will document the supervision of medication and application of creams in your care records.
  • If you refuse to take your medication the care worker will not force this. It will be documented in your care records and the management of Care 4 u informed immediately.
